This week I had the opportunity to evaluate the all-new 2015.5 Volvo V60 Cross County, based on the all-new V60 wagon platform introduced last fall as a 2015 model. I had pretty high expectations for the new V60 Cross County. Volvo exceeded those expectations. This is truly a tremendous go anywhere luxury wagon that provides safety, versatility, comfort and outstanding performance. The five-passenger, all-wheel drive V60 Cross County is powered by a 2.5-liter turbocharged I-5 engine delivering 250 horsepower and 266 lbs.-ft. torque. Mated to a six-speed Geartronic automatic transmission with Sport Mode, the Cross County provides an additional 2.6 inches of ground clearance over the V60 (for a total of 7.9 inches), enhancing off-road versatility. Combined with Volvo’s electronically controlled all-wheel drive system with instant traction, drivers are provided with a sure-footed grip in all situations. As you would expect from a Volvo, the V60 Cross County is loaded with safety feature. A small sample of safety features include: • City Safe — a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions with a vehicle ahead occurring at speeds below 31 mph. Utilizing a closing velocity sensor to determine whether a collision is likely based on the closing speed, the system will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the vehicle to help avoid a rear-end collision. (I actually participated in a Volvo City Safe demonstration, where I was instructed to drive the vehicle toward a barricade and remove my feet from pedals. The car stopped itself before reaching the barricade). • Dynamic Stability and Traction Control — The system uses a roll angle sensor to detect and react to oversteer and understeer at an earlier stage if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator while steering. It also improves handling during evasive maneuvers. • Corner Traction Control by Torque Vectoring — improves handling by redistributing torque to the outer wheel to help steer the car around a turn. • Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake — A radar- and camera-based system that detects pedestrians in front of the car, warning the driver if anyone walks into the car’s path and automatically activates full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time. (There is not enough space in this column to provide a comprehensive list of safety features). While capable of going off the highway, the V60 Cross County is extremely well suited for long road trips on the highway (as well as short commutes). It is, after all, a luxury wagon, too. The new Volvo V60 Cross Country is a must for the test-drive list.
