Mail Tribune 100, Jan. 26, 1918 Continued Saturday Jan 27, 2018 at 7:26 AM Jan. 26, 1918 Continued FIRST SOLDIER FUNERAL OF WAR Patriotic Medford did not turn out in any large number to attend the funeral services held at the Catholic church at 10 a.m. Saturday over the late Francis W. Winn of Wellen, who died at Quantico, Va., while serving in the Marine corps, despite the fact that this was the first soldier funeral of the war to be held in this city. A number of the high school students were in attendance, the dead man having graduated from that institution. There were also a number of friends from Wellen as well as others present. Father Maher, priest of the Sacred Heart hospital, celebrated requiem high mass and Father Connty of Ashland delivered the funeral address which was fervent in feeling and patriotic sentiment. The choir of St. Mary's academy sang special music. Burial was in the Jacksonville cemetery. There were many beautiful floral tributes, including a large offering from the dead man's comrades in the Marine corps at Quantico, which came with the body, and a wreath from the high school student body and faculty. The pallbearers were Merl Willits, Maurice Mahoney, Sharon Merriman, Joseph Bateman, R.C. Hess and Wier McDonald. SOCIETY The service flag at the Jackson school, containing 43 stars, was unfurled last Friday afternoon at the school. The program was very patriotic. After the singing of "America" Mildred Jenkins read in a very able manner "Your Flag and My Flag." Bertha Applegate read "The Flag Passing By" and "A Mother's Talk to Her Soldier Boy." The flag was presented to the school by the eighth grade pupils in honor of the boys and girls who have entered service from the Jackson ward.
