COLLEGE FOOTBALL Ducks' Buckner sidelined for spring Comment By Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM By Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News DeForest Buckner is not able to practice during the spring, but Oregon’s senior defensive end said he will be ready for the fall. Buckner said he had “just a minor scope” on his knee after last season and added that it’s feeling “better.” He was on crutches last month, but is now walking without any assistance. “I just started rehabbing everything, strengthening and running mechanics, and all that stuff again,” the 6-foot-7, 290-pound Buckner said. “I’m taking it easy during the spring, rehabbing and everything, but I’ll be ready for the fall.” Buckner has been on the sideline during practices helping out his younger teammates. “Coach Helfrich’s rule is that if you’re not going full, you’re a coach,” Oregon defensive coordinator Don Pellum said. Buckner has been mentioned as one of the expected leaders of Oregon’s defense next season and he is working on that role while unable to take the field. “I can’t really do much, so I am trying to be more vocal and help out guys with whatever they need,” Buckner said. “That can be technique or just motivating them.” Buckner and Pellum both cited senior Tui Talia and T.J. Daniel as defensive linemen who have impressed during the first week of spring practice and said freshman Canton Kaumatule is picking up the defense. “The nice thing about spring football is you just rotate guys so everyone gets a ton of reps,” Pellum said. “That is good for coaches because you get a chance to evaluate guys. During the season, the ones are with the ones, twos with the twos, and threes with the threes, so if you have a guy not as experienced with the threes and nobody else is real experienced, it is hard to see what they can do. Now you take a guy going with the threes and put him with the ones where they all know what they are doing, all he has to do is focus on his job and you get a chance to see what he can do because he can relax and cut it loose.” Buckner was fourth on the team last year with 81 tackles, including a team-leading 13 for loss, and is a returning starter along with Alex Balducci on the line. Oregon will need to replace Arik Armstead, who left after his junior year for the NFL draft. Buckner also considered leaving early for the NFL before deciding to stay for his senior season. “At the beginning of the season, I wasn’t thinking about it but toward the end of the year, I had a hard decision to make,” Buckner said. “I went over it with my family and thought coming back was the right decision. I love Oregon and I’m having a great time here.” By Eugene Register-Guard MailTribune.com By Eugene Register-Guard Posted Apr. 5, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Comment or view comments Reader Reaction » STAY INFORMED Email NewsLetter Sign Up Today Sign up for our newsletter and have the top headlines from your community delivered right to your inbox. fantasy football RBs Ready to Break Out on New Teams Apr. 2, 2015 at 10:21 am Who Will Be QB1s with New Teams in 2015?
