Knights move into tie for second North Valley stifles Mazama's Dena Young, moves one game behind Phoenix Girls prep basketball KLAMATH FALLS -- It didn't take long for Mazama's Skyline Conference girls basketball foes to figure out the formula for beating the Vikings: Shut down Dena Young and you shut down the Vikings. North Valley took a cue from Phoenix, a 48-43 winner over Mazama on Tuesday, with a box-and-one defense against the Mazama senior. The end result helped the Knights pull into a second-place tie in the Skyline standings with a 35-28 win Friday night. "We knew it was coming," Mazama coach Kelly Reynolds said of the defensive concentration on Young. "We spent all week getting ready for it, but talking's one thing and getting it done is another. When that happens, we need someone else to step up." None of the other Vikings was able to accept the challenge, however, as Young was held to five points and Mazama converted only 11 of 40 attempts. "They did a box-and-one pretty much the whole game on Dena and our other kids didn't shoot the ball real well," said Reynolds. ``Nobody really looked to score." Charlotte Beck tallied 11 points while Malloree Enoch and McKenzie Clark each had eight to lead North Valley (7-10, 5-2 Skyline). The loss dropped Mazama (8-8, 5-2) into a three-way tie for second place with Henley and North Valley in the league standings. The trio trail Phoenix by one game. "We'll just have to go back to the drawing board," said Reynolds. "We're going to have to find ways to score when the ball's not in Dena's hands." PHOENIX 47, ILLINOIS VALLEY 39 -- At Cave Junction, Phoenix (9-6, 6-1 Skyline) became more aggressive against the Illinois Valley press in the second half and added some easy transition baskets off steals to erase a two-point halftime deficit. Beth Nikodym led a balanced Phoenix attack with 12 points. Jennifer Bones added eight points and five steals, while Jessica Prisbrey contributed eight points and six rebounds for the Pirates. Lindsey Merrill had 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 4-of-6 from the foul line to lead Hidden Valley.
