They also take it literally. The 2013 champion Comets turned four double plays and topped Roseburg Pepsi, 3-2, during the opening day of the American Legion A state baseball tournament at Harry & David Field on Wednesday. Pepsi's day began and ended on the wrong end of web gems, and Central Point delivered some defensive diamonds in between. The bottom of the first inning concluded for Roseburg with Central Point catcher Dylan Morgan tagging out a Pepsi runner who was attempting to make it home after connecting on a base hit. Right fielder Gage Pease began the sequence by rounding up the ball and throwing to first baseman Neil Bastendorff, who relayed it to Morgan. The Area 4 champion Comets were just warming up. In the second inning, Central Point third baseman Gunnar Asher threw a Roseburg player out at first base after a bunt attempt. During that commotion, the Pepsi player who was on first base was charging for third. Morgan sprinted over to cover Asher's spot and complete the double play. In the fourth, Morgan and shortstop Caine Smith executed a backpick with runners on first and second. Smith then relayed to Asher, who unleashed a throw from third to second baseman Avery Martin for another double play. The bottom of the sixth wrapped up when pitcher Dylan Pearce hauled in a weak, one-out pop fly and then doubled off Roseburg's Grant Ronk at first base. Pepsi trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Roseburg's Spencer Taylor hit a one-out RBI double. The Comets killed any further drama — and recorded their fourth double play of the day — seconds later when Isaac Smith pounded a line drive to Bastendorff, who made the grab before throwing to Smith at second base for the final out. "Defensively, I couldn't have been more proud of the way we played catch in some big situations," Central Point head coach Jay Campbell said. "Anytime you start the game by throwing a runner out at home plate, you gain some momentum. ... There were just some heady defensive plays by Neil, Caine and really all the infielders. The kids did a good job of having confidence in their throws." Pearce improved to 5-0 after allowing eight hits and two walks and striking out six. Roseburg starter Will Reddekopp threw a four-hitter with nine strikeouts, four walks and three runs (one earned). The Central Point offense did enough to get by. Bastendorff, who went 2-for-3, hit an RBI single in the second inning to drive in Martin and give the Comets a 1-0 lead. Cavin Gillispie made it 2-0 Central Point in the third with a sacrifice fly to score Morgan. Martin followed with a one-out double to put runners on second and third, but the Comets were unable to capitalize. Jake Cartwright added a sacrifice fly that brought home Jace Godley in the sixth. Isaac Smith had an RBI single in the fifth inning for Pepsi. Central Point will play La Grande at 7:30 tonight. NORTH MEDFORD 6, JAKE'S CRAWFISH 0 — Larson Kindreich tossed a no-hitter and went 3-for-4 at the plate to power North Medford in the first-round game. Kindreich struck out 10 with one walk and also had a single in the Mavericks' four-run second inning. Honus Kindreich, Berry Hunt and Tate Cowden also had hits during North's backbreaking rally. The Mavericks (24-18) will play the Salem Senators in a second-round game today at 4:30 p.m. Salem beat North Coos, 4-3. LA GRANDE 10, SOUTH MEDFORD 2 — After a 90-minute lightning delay, La Grande finished off South Medford at Harry & David Field. La Grande, which tallied 15 hits, will play Central Point at 7:30 tonight. South Medford will take on Roseburg Pepsi at 12:30 p.m. Eric Wallan and Matt DeVries were both 2-for-3 for the Colts, who committed five errors.
