Ex-chief Crawford released early Former Gold Hill police chief Dave Crawford was released early from the Jackson County jail last week because of overcrowding. Crawford, sentenced on July 29 for fourth-degree assault and harassment, was ordered to report to jail by Aug. 5. He was released Friday. A judge had given him a 20-day sentence for assaulting a dirt biker after a chase and for threatening an elderly couple after they slowed for deer. Releasing inmates early happens all the time at the jail, which can't hold more than 190 inmates.
