All the while, he cultivates an unforced balance between the firm and the soft in everything he does. With more than 600 titles and 30 albums in his catalog, Burnett is like a multi-faceted gemstone where each angle is a reflection of diversity. His newest CD set, "Crooked Love," is yet another labor of love. Produced on a tight budget, it is still unlikely to pay for itself. As a rule, the price for his CDs is $10, but because it’s a two-disc set, he hopes to get $15 for copies of the recording at his live shows. Burnett is a talented singer with a voice of sincere honesty like Tim Hardin, John Prine and James Taylor. Add to that the contemporary earnestness of Dave Matthews or Coldplay’s Chris Martin but without their edginess. “I’ve never been into straining my voice to make a point,” Burnett says. “My singing is an offering and best done when I relax.”  Burnett will perform his acoustic originals from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, at Liquid Assets, 96 N. Main St., Ashland. On Wednesday, Nov. 5, he will host his Fourth Annual Political Songs Open Mic at 8 p.m. at The Wild Goose Cafe, 2365 Ashland St. Sign-ups will be at 7:30 p.m.     Unlike music and film mogul David Geffen — who's given a nod in Joni Mitchell’s “Free Man in Paris" on her 1974 album "Court and Spark" as the one "stoking the star-maker machinery behind the popular song" — Burnett wants nothing of the machine. In fact, he is uncertain if the old music merchandising model even exists anymore. Most of his music is free. Download anything from his catalog for nothing, or leave a donation in his digital tip jar at www.geneburnett.com. “I decided to give it all away free and then see what freely comes back,” he says. “Once I realized that music was my life, not my career, it freed up a huge amount of energy that was previously bound up in the politics of the music business and allowed me to focus instead on its more creative, therapeutic and enjoyable aspects." There is a certain acceptance of his circumstances for achieving significant financial return on his art. “Today’s audience is increasingly more into looking at gadgets in their hands than paying attention to a performer,” he shrugs. Touching on this theme with as much indifference as he can muster, clearly he directly feels the changes in attention span, culture and the performing arts. “I'm really into local, live music and am a big supporter of open-mic sessions and community musical fundraising events,” he says. “The music business has enough egos and power-trippers. I'd rather focus on the creative joy of writing, the fun of performing for people without a lot of gear and fuss, and the simple act of listening to the people in my community sing about their lives. I'm in this for love." Burnett attributes the influences for his songs to voices in his head. He has a parliamentary mind, he says, with many different voices: positive, negative, humorous, cynical, bright, dark and many more contradictory aspects of consciousness — all given equal measure in how to process his experiences and the way he writes songs. He cites Leonard Cohen as the influence for the cover art on his CD, "Crooked Love," with an image depicting a cracked, hard surface. He draws musical inspiration from a line in Cohen’s song "Anthem." “There is a crack, a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in." One of his favorites on the CD is "Baby Talk," recorded with guitarist Jeff Stanley and bassist Dave Hampton. Other local musicians featured on the CD are Tom Freeman, Jeff Kloetzel, Jack Fischer, Pete Herzog, Robbie Lindauer, Mark Arinsberg, Big Irv Lubliner, Robbie DaCosta, Jef Fretwell, Jeff Addicott, Jim Page and Michael Whipple.
