Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 12, 2006 Mother, two toddlers die in fiery crash A Medford mother and her two children were killed Monday in Arizona when their van was struck head-on by a car traveling the wrong way down the highway. The three were passengers in a 1996 Plymouth Voyager driven by Janice Hard, 50, of Oklahoma. They were traveling west on Interstate 40 near Kingman, Ariz., said Arizona Department of Public Safety operations assistant Rick Ulrich. Apparently, a Kingman man in a 2003 Hyundai was driving the wrong way down the interstate when his car struck the van. Investigators are still trying to determine how fast each car was moving when they crashed. However, the fact that no skidmarks were found on the road suggests neither driver had time to slow down before impact. The interstate’s speed limit is 75 mph, Ulrich said. "When the cars collided they burst into flame," he added. "They just exploded." Pronounced dead at the scene were 20-year-old Tabitha Nelson, of the 400 block of Benson Street, and her two children, 3-year-old Damian and 2-year-old Angelina. Hard, whose relationship with the Nelsons wasn’t available, also was killed, as was the Hyundai’s driver. Ulrich said a toxicology test was performed on the Hyundai’s driver. The results were not yet available. Medford police notified Nelson’s husband of the deaths early Tuesday.
