Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend September 8, 2005 Fire inquiry points to arson Medford fire officials have wrapped up investigations into two blazes that started during the Labor Day weekend, labeling one an arson and the other an accident. Investigators determined a car fire at an auto-repair shop in the 1500 block of Sage Road was an arson. The fire, reported at 7:45 p.m. Monday, gutted a partially dismantled GMC Sierra sport-utility vehicle and caused minor damage to two other cars, said Greg Kleinberg, a Medford fire investigator. "I believe someone walked through or drove through there and maliciously did this," Kleinberg said. During an investigation, fire officials learned the blaze started in the SUV’s passenger-side door compartment, Kleinberg said. It remains unclear what device was use to set the fire. No suspects have been identified in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, investigators concluded a damaging Sunday fire at a South Orange Street residence was accidentally started. Kleinberg said it is not known how the fire ignited. Possible causes include a faulty electrical system, unattended candles or a cigarette, he said. Several people were evacuated after the blaze started at about 5:25 a.m. inside the older, two-story house in the first block of South Orange Street. The home had been remodeled into five apartments. Advertisement Kleinberg said the apartment in which the fire started was not equipped with a working smoke detector, which created a danger for all of the building’s residents. "This easily could have been a multiple-fatality fire," Kleinberg said. Under state law, property owners are required to install working smoke detectors in their rentals. Renters are responsible for making sure the smoke detector is operational while they occupy a rented home or apartment, Kleinberg said. There was a smoke detector in the apartment, but it had not been installed and was not operational.
