SOU track team picks up 2 more national qualifiers SOU senior Kena Page hopped 18 feet, 61/2 inches in winning the women's long jump and posting a qualifying mark. Sophomore Megan Heuberger posted a qualifying mark in the women's 400-meter hurdles with a first-place effort of 1 minute, 3.95 seconds. Oregon Tech swept the men's and women's team competitions, edging Southern Oregon in both. The Fighting Owls managed a 162-161 advantage over the Raiders in the men's competition, with the OIT women outscoring SOU 200-184. In other men's team scores, Shasta College was third at 88.5, followed by College of the Siskiyous (74), Humboldt State (66) and Lassen College (15). In the women's competition, Humboldt State was third (71), followed by Shasta College (68), Lassen College (25) and College of the Siskiyous (5). "As a team it was disappointing to lose," said SOU coach Mike Jones, "but we had several good performances and that's what you look for at this point of the season." The Raiders have now qualified five women and three men for nationals. Tiwana Merritt won the women's 400 with a time of 58.1 and was second in the 100 at 13.0, while Nicole Robertson won the women's shot put with a heave of 41-41/4 and placed first in the discus (141-9). Also placing first for SOU were Shelly Gorin in the women's 800 (2:27.4), Sean Peterson in the men's 800 (1:57.0), Nick Dunn in the men's 400 hurdles (55.2), Cass Smith in the women's pole vault (11-6), Jeff Bentley in the men's javelin (203-2), Richard Bailey in the men's discus (150-11) and Rachel Childers in the women's hammer (142-11). Former South Medford High standout Perry Custance placed first for Oregon Tech in the men's 1,500 at 4:11.4 and fourth in the 800 at 1:59.8. Softball SOUTHERN OREGON 5-4, CONCORDIA 3-1 - At Portland, Lisa Aitchison's three-run home run in Game 1 lit a fire under Southern Oregon and spurred the Raiders to a doubleheader sweep and a tie for second in the Cascade Conference with Eastern Oregon. After Concordia had taken a 3-0 lead with a three-run blast of its own in the third inning, Aitchison knotted the score the next inning with a homer that also brought home Seanna Doyel and Brandi Brown. Haley Varley drove in Stacey Marshall with the eventual game-winner in the fourth. Varley, Aitchison and Doyel each had two hits in the opener. The Raiders (16-4 overall, 4-2 Cascade) kept the pressure on in the six-inning nightcap, scoring all four of their runs in the opening two innings. Angie Chaplin led the way in Game 2 with a 3-for-4 effort and three RBIs, while Doyel, Varley and Latisha Inget each had two hits in the rain-shortened affair. The Raiders play a doubleheader at Eastern Oregon today at 1 p.m., then hit the road to play a twin bill at Albertson on Monday.
