Peter Sage says a recent blooming of outdoor art has brightened the Rogue Valley. But the very nature of that art — specifically, its location — makes it vulnerable, as he discovered Friday. Sage, who lives in east Medford, said Cheryl Garcia's sculpture "Big Red," which had previously stood in the yard of his home, was reported stolen Friday to the Medford Police Department after it was discovered missing. Garcia is probably best known for her metal sculptures of poppies installed in 2011 at Quail Run Vineyard on South Stage Road near Jacksonville. Sage said he purchased his sculpture, called "Big Red," about two years ago. The sculpture weighs about 120 pounds and stands 8 feet tall, composed of 24-inch red grape leaves and large clusters of grapes finished in a translucent coating. Sage said he paid about $2,000 for the sculpture, which was completed in 2012. "This piece was heavy, but not so heavy that two stout guys with a pickup truck couldn't have taken it," he said. Sage, a former Jackson County commissioner and retired financial adviser, said the increase in public artwork in the Rogue Valley has been one of the brightest developments in Southern Oregon in recent years. "They're delightful, but they're vulnerable unless the public interest is such that nobody will take them because they're dangerous to steal," he said. "The only thing you can do with the art other than melt it down for its scrap value is display it in public places." "It would be a shame if these pieces of semi-public art were to become commonly stolen," Sage said. "It would be better if people who stole these realized that they were very visible and dangerous things to possess because they were so easily and quickly identified as stolen property."
