Detective Sue Campbell said an alert teller on Tuesday noticed what appeared to be a convenience check (sent by credit card companies to cardholders) written for a suspiciously large amount. The bank called police. "We were able to verify several problems" with a recently opened account, Campbell said. She said a pattern of lots of checks written on a new account and large deposits of potentially forged checks led police to believe that the account had been opened for fraudulent purposes. A bank employee noted that the account holders had been going from bank to bank throughout the day and were expected to visit another branch. Police found Jeffrey Ray Price, 42; Carol Loraine Price (a.k.a. Carol Loraine Leiter), 37; Amy Suzanne Pearce, 18; and Candace Dawyn Birdwell, 18, with mail allegedly stolen from rural areas south of Medford, Campbell said. Officers arrested the four on charges of first- and second-degree theft, first-degree forgery and mail theft. They were lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $18,000 bail each. Campbell credits bank employees for noticing the details that helped police track down the apparent forgery. She steers the Medford police department’s white-collar crime unit and works closely with retailers and banks to curb fraud, forgery and shoplifting.
