Events include: Central Point U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, U.S. Rep. Greg Walden and Oregon Rep. Sal Esquivel will speak at a Memorial Day Commemoration to be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial at Don Jones Park, 223 W. Vilas Road, Central Point. There will be a color guard, followed by “The Star-Spangled Banner” and an invocation by Pastor Syd Wyncoop. The memorial is dedicated to all service men and women killed in action from Oregon’s statehood to the present. There will be patriotic music, coffee and snacks. Eagle Point U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, U.S. Rep. Greg Walden and Veterans Administration Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center & Clinics Phil Dionne will be the keynote speakers during the 2016 National Cemetery Memorial Day program from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at the Eagle Point National Cemetery Rostrum, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. The program to remember current and past military members includes flag displays, the Scottish Pipe Band, an Oregon Army National Guard Military Honors Team rifle salute and flyovers by U.S. Air Force 173rd Fighter Wing F-15 Eagle aircraft and Stearman bi-planes. Diane Strong of the Southern Oregon Jazz Orchestra will sing the national anthem, and retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Al Zeller will play “Taps.” About 21,000 flags have been placed on graves at the cemetery by Scenic Middle School students. Rogue River Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4116 and Auxiliary are hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Woodville Cemetery, off Main Street at Wards Creek Road. The VFW previously put out American flags throughout the community. Graves at the cemetery have been were cleaned and decorated with American flags by Rogue River fifth-graders, under the supervision of VFW Commander Andy Prudhon. Monday's ceremony includes a flag raising, the placing of flowers and wreaths, a rifle salute, a bugler playing taps and a speech by Mayor Pam VanArsdale. A barbecue, with steak and chicken kebabs and white rice, follows at the VFW Post, 410 E. Main St., at 11 a.m. For more information, call 541-582-0689. Jacksonville The Friends of Jacksonville’s Historic Cemetery will hold its annual Memorial Day Cemetery Meet and Greet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the cemetery at the top of Cemetery Road in Jacksonville. Flags will be placed on the graves of those veterans resting in the Jacksonville Cemetery grounds and volunteers will greet visitors and assist them in locating grave sites of loved ones. Ashland The Ashland post of the American Legion will hold a Memorial Day Service at Mountain View Cemetery, with band music starting at about 10:30 a.m. Monday. A bi-plane flyover is scheduled, along with a speech by Deputy Police Chief Warren Hensman. Prior to the service at the cemetery, the American Legion post will host a pancake breakfast to raise funds for veterans and youth programs. Breakfast will be served at Pioneer Hall across from Lithia Park in Ashland from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday. Cost is $7 for adults, $3 for 7-12 years, free for 6 and under. On Tuesday, the Southern Oregon Concert Band will present its “Spring Concert,” a program that includes American band music by Clare Grundman, Frank Ticheli, James Barnes and Julie Giroux in commemoration of Memorial Day. The community band will take the stage at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Music Recital Hall on the Southern Oregon University campus, 405 S. Mountain Ave., Ashland. A highlight of the show is “Arlington” by composer Paul Murtha, accompanied by visuals of Arlington National Cemetery. Admission is by donation.
