Ashland High wins team title in state speech competition For the ninth time in 11 years, Ashland High School has won the team title in the Oregon state 4A speech competition. Competing Saturday at Linfield College, Ashland took top honors with 103 overall points. The second-place team was Barlow High School, which scored 77 points. Eagle Point High School's team of Jason Alansky and Jeff Harris earned the state title in team policy debate at the tournament. Alansky was the only competitor from among 62 schools to make the final rounds in three events. For Ashland High, the margin of victory was closer than the point totals might indicate, said John Tredway, Ashland speech and debate coach. The turning point came on the third day of the tournament, when the Ashland team sent 13 of 14 individual event semi-finalists to the final round of competition. Four Ashland High students earned first place titles in several events. They included Caitlin Donovan and Amy Heidrick, first place in dual interpretation; Poppy Alexander, first place in Lincoln Douglas debate and Katie Osvold, first place in expository speaking. Others earning titles included Donovan, third place in memorized serious interpretation; Andy Howe, third place in memorized humorous interpretation; Jordan Rose-Merkle, fourth place in memorized humorous interpretation; Natalie Glucklich, fourth place in memorized humorous interpretation; Skye Mathieson, third place in poetry reading; Jackson Myers, fourth place in prose reading; Tara Anderson, fourth place in original oratory; eidrick, fourth place in original oratory; Rex Reichenshammer, fourth place in after-dinner speaking; Rose-Merkle and Glucklich also took third place in dual interpretation. Eagle Point winners included Alansky, second place in radio commentary and fourth place in humorous interpretation; and Richelle Blanchard, third place in expository speaking. Eagle Point took sixth place overall in state Sweepstakes awards.
