Central Point Police Chief Kristine Allison said police were responding to a domestic disturbance call just after 2:30 p.m. when police heard the gunshot at 715 Laurel St. and requested the assistance of other agencies. The intersection of Eighth and Laurel streets was closed as Oregon State Police, Jackson County Sheriff's Department and Medford police swarmed to the scene. "We had other units come for everyone's safety and to make sure that everyone was safe at that time," Allison said. Travis Earl Dahling, 32, was arrested Wednesday on a felony charge of unlawful use of a weapon, 10 misdemeanor counts of reckless endangering and a misdemeanor charge of second-degree disorderly conduct. He was lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $48,000 bail. Neighbor Chris McCall, who lives two houses away, said he was cleaning his bedroom when he witnessed "dozens" of police cars from different agencies converging on the street. McCall said Dahling has had a history of health problems that sometimes brought emergency responders to the neighborhood, but McCall said the police response was a surprise. Dahling was taken into custody before 3 p.m., after negotiators coerced Dahling out without incident. Nearby Jewett Elementary was placed on a "soft" lockdown, according to police. After Dahling was arrested, roadways reopened and outside agencies left the scene. Police officers were seen carrying two rifles from the home. The single gunshot was allegedly fired inside the house away from others, Allison said. "At this time we believe it wasn't at any individual," Allison said. "It was potentially in the ceiling of the home." Children were inside at the time of the gunshot, but Allison declined to say how many. She said removing the children from the crime scene was the police department's first priority. Allison and other officers reached out to neighbors at the conclusion of the incident to communicate what had happened. McCall, his mother and others said they appreciated the extra communication about what had happened. "(In the past) they'd just say, 'Go back inside,' " McCall said.
