Mail-order returns to get easier WASHINGTON -- The Postal Service began a new service Thursday for folks who want to return mail-order purchases. The Electronic Merchandise Returns Service offers the buyer who wants to make a return a way to print out a mailing label with paid postage on a computer printer. One catch: The retailer has to set up an account at a local post office to offer this service. The first retailer to join up is Altrec, a Seattle based company selling outdoor goods. The system, called Returns@ease, lets a buyer who wants to return an item contact the selling company via the Internet. The retailer sends the customer, also via Internet, a mailing label with postage. The customer prints it and applies to the package being returned. The parcel can then be given to a letter carrier, dropped in a mail collection box or taken to a local post office.
