Is Reddy too rough to travel? I see the possibilities of a real disaster just waiting to happen on Reddy Avenue. I had to drive down this street recently, and believe me, if a fire engine had to get through there would be no way. Since this is one of the narrowest streets in Medford, why are cars allowed to park on both sides? -- Max M., Medford Reddy is one of the narrowest streets in Medford because it's one of the oldest, Max. One section dates to 1910. City code requires minimum residential street widths of 28 feet. Reddy is only 24 feet in some places, but that's been allowed because it's so old, according to associate city traffic engineer Lisa Owens. As far as parking goes, people who live on Reddy apparently like it the way it is. A majority vote of the property owners is required to remove on-street parking, Owens said. To get the street up to code would mean cutting down trees that line the street. Residents aren't too crazy about the idea, Owens said. "We could do it," she said, "but we'd lose the trees." But what about the disaster thing? Is Reddy, in fact, too narrow for fire trucks? Owens doubts it, but she said she would look into the matter.
