EMERGENCY RESPONSE Medford teen drowns in Applegate Lake Comment By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Follow @@mtcrimebeat MailTribune.com By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Follow @@mtcrimebeat Posted Jul. 22, 2016 at 12:59 PM Updated Jul 22, 2016 at 4:47 PM By Nick Morgan Mail Tribune Follow @@mtcrimebeat Posted Jul. 22, 2016 at 12:59 PM Updated Jul 22, 2016 at 4:47 PM » Social News The body of a Medford teen was recovered at Applegate Lake Thursday evening. A Jackson County Search and Rescue dive team found the body of 17-year-old Antonio Jose Garcia of Medford just before 8 p.m. Thursday. Garcia had been swimming with friends, and about 4:30 p.m. he jumped into the lake near the dam intake. As Garcia tried to swim to shore, he struggled and went under the water, according to a release issued Friday by the Jackson County Sheriff's Department. Friends tried to rescue him, but Garcia failed to surface, according to the release. Dispatchers received the call for help at 4:41 p.m. Thursday, and Applegate Fire District No. 9 was first to arrive on scene at 5 p.m. Sheriff's deputies arrived shortly after to search for Garcia by boat. “That’s a remote area,” Capt. Mike Kuntz with the Applegate Fire District said, adding that it's about 15 miles from Ruch. “You don’t have cell coverage out there, and it’s a long ways to the lake.” The teens tried using their mobile phones but couldn't call for help because they were out of range. They ultimately called for help from a store nearby, Kuntz said. Divers found Garcia's body in the lake at 7:53 p.m., according to the release. Water near the dam flowed in at 67 cubic feet per second, and out at 325 cubic feet per second, according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers data. Drowning deaths at the lake are uncommon, the last one being six years ago, archives show. On July 20, 2010, boaters found the body of 59-year-old David Click, who was fishing and camping. Why Click, who did not swim, went into the water is unknown. A decade prior, 15-year-old Mario Sauceva died at the lake while swimming on a skip-day trip on the morning of Friday, May 26, 2000. Sauceva and another boy had been swimming from a lake platform toward the shore, when Sauceva began yelling for help and went underwater. The drowning had been the first in recent memory, a story in the Mail Tribune archives said. Kuntz recommends people wear life jackets when swimming in remote lakes and rivers. "It's the safer thing to do," he said. Reach reporter Nick Morgan at 541-776-4471 or [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter at @MTCrimeBeat.
