Paul Rogers: Schedule your time wisely By Paul Rogers More Content Now MailTribune.com By Paul Rogers More Content Now Posted Apr. 13, 2015 @ 9:16 am By Paul Rogers More Content Now Posted Apr. 13, 2015 @ 9:16 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> How do homeowners, with limited time available, keep up with all the varied tasks associated with a wet, cold spring season? The truth is that we don’t. There is too much that needs doing to do it all in a timely fashion. We try to maintain some semblance of order by prioritizing. Some tasks such as raking and sweeping the lawn, pruning broken branches and cleaning up the debris of winter can be done as soon as the ground has drained and dried. If the soil can be worked, shrubs, trees, perennials and some vegetables can be installed, but the soil must be dry and crumbly when dug and raked. If the soil is glistening wet, working it will destroy its structure! One warm day does not give you permission to ruin the soil for an entire season. Refocus toward repairing garden structures. Clean pots, tubs and window boxes of last year’s plants and soil, do any painting needed, and rebuild rock walls, stone paths and patios. Does your landscape include retainer walls that need rebuilding or repair? Is your compost in fit condition to be spread around emerging plants and as topdressing for new growing areas? If you maintain a bark or wood chip mulch around permanent plantings, consider using a three-pronged cultivator to fluff it up. It is unlikely that the woody mulches need to have additional material added. A proper depth for permanent mulches around trees and shrubs is 2 to 3 inches deep. Any greater depth than 3 inches is more likely to retard plant growth than it is to stimulate it. Without a good reason, never, ever remove existing mulch! Some homeowners like to add a skim coating of the same type of mulch previously used to the existing mulch so as to freshen its appearance, but be sure to loosen the existing mulch before adding to it. If you garden in raised beds, it is possible that they are in friable condition and ready to be planted. Properly sized raised beds can be reached from either side of the bed and thus, are never walked on and never suffer from compaction. There are two considerations that enter into your selection of plants to be set or seeded. The first question to ask yourself is, “Will I eat the crop?” There is no valid reason to plant a crop of Swiss chard or kale if you will not eat it. Your space, time and energy are limited. Do not waste them. The second question relates to the cold-hardiness of the plants chosen. Peas of all sorts, including the edible pod types, are an excellent choice. Onion sets or transplants figure in many early plantings, as their green shoots can be cut and used in salads almost immediately. Plant broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce (both loose-leaf and heading types), cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, green leaf or rainbow Swiss chard, spinach and radishes, as your tastes dictate. Each is cold-tolerant and actually will produce better and be more crisp and tastier when grown cool. Be prepared to replant a second crop in two weeks.
