The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) announced Friday that OR-3, the third wolf collared in Oregon, has been spotted in northern Klamath County. According to a news release, a private citizen captured a picture of a black wolf with a trail camera this summer. ODFW later confirmed the photograph was OR-3. “The trail went cold on him for a long time, it’s kind of amazing this photo pops up in summer of 2015,” said John Stephenson, a wolf coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). OR-3 was fitted with a VHF (very high frequency) radio collar in 2010, when he was just 3 years old. The collar does not send GPS locations; instead, VHF collars emit an analog signal that requires biologists to travel within its range to pick up the signal on a radio receiver. OR-3 left the Imnaha pack in May 2011. Since then, OR-3 has made only a few appearances, including being spotted by ODFW officials southeast of Fossil, in Wheeler County, in July 2011. “He’s just been off the radar,” Stephenson said. The release said OR-3’s radio collar has exceeded its battery life and officials believe the collar no longer emits a signal. OR-3 was fitted with a collar and a green ear tag one year before Oregon’s famed wandering wolf, OR-7, was fitted with his. OR-7 is also a descendent of the northeastern Oregon Imnaha Pack. He made headlines as a lone wolf traversing across Oregon and into Northern California. OR-7 became the first confirmed wolf sighted west of the Cascades since 1937 and has since settled in the mountains of southeast Jackson County. In January, OR-7 made headlines again when he, a mate, and three pups born in 2014 were christened as Western Oregon’s first wolf pack and dubbed the Rogue Pack. OR-7’s GPS collar stopped working earlier this year. According to Stephenson, wildlife officials hope to capture and fit a member of the Rogue pack with new collar a before year-end. Wolves throughout Oregon are protected by the state Endangered Species Act. Wolves west of Oregon Highways 395, 78 and 95, including the Rogue Pack and OR-3, are also protected by the federal Endangered Species Act.
