A breeze blows through pine trees and into her studio in the hills outside Talent. Wild turkeys strut by as they forage for food. She and her husband, artist and illustrator Martin Goldman, have lived throughout the United States and always find inspiration around them. Each relocation is labor-intensive, requiring them to move 3,500 pounds of marble. "We've moved so many times," Greene says. "Martin said, 'Can't you pick up embroidery?' " Art lovers can meet the couple and see how they have created artistic lives for themselves during the free Ashland Open Studio Tour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10-11. Greene carves her marble slabs in a woodland studio steps away from the couple's octagon-shaped house at 9647 Wagner Creek Road. She inks the finished slabs and uses them to make prints — including a series inspired by the speeches of American Indian chiefs that took 15 years of work. She also carves three-dimensional sculptures from a variety of stone types. Back in 1968, Greene was dissatisfied with oil painting, pastels and charcoal. Then an art instructor changed the course of her artistic career. "A sculpture teacher looked at my hands and said, 'You should be carving marble,' " Greene says of that day back in 1968. Greene and Martin have turned their living room into a virtual gallery, with prints and photographs on the walls and pedestals displaying Greene's carved sculptures. In a room leading off from the living room, Martin — an escapee from the advertising world — has his own studio where he works on drawings, illustrations and photography. "Our home is our studio," he says. In Phoenix, painter Jhenna Quinn Lewis will welcome people to her sunlit studio that occupies a room in her house at 92 Mountain View Drive. She specializes in paintings of birds perched on objects such as antique books, Asian bowls and stones. Her studio walls are filled with paintings. Her easel next to a window faces an area where Lewis creates the still-life arrangements she paints. She adds in birds that are based on nature photographs taken by Ashland resident Barbara Orsow. "It's fun to open up my studio," Lewis says. "Not many people except my friends get to see my studio." Like the other artists on the tour route, Lewis will have paintings for sale. Art lovers can also see new paintings she is working on that will be exhibited in galleries. Ashland artist Suzanne Etienne, who is known for her vibrant, joyful paintings, will open her cottage studio to the public. The cottage behind her house at 143 N. Third St. is painted a sunny yellow. Etienne will show her work as well as the paintings of women who flock to her studio for art classes. "We have coffee, music, laughter and sometimes tears, and we're all painting," Etienne says. "To watch my students grow has been marvelous." Her students range from beginners to accomplished professional artists looking to improve their skills or branch out. Etienne uses vivid colors to paint subjects that include flowers, animals, food and street-side shops in France, Scotland, England and other countries. Her paintings range from small 9-by-9-inch squares to large 3-by-6-foot canvases. Etienne says enthusiasm keeps growing every year for the annual Ashland Open Studio Tour. "There's something about going into people's actual work spaces and homes that is special," she says. "It's closer to the source and the heartbeat of what makes an artist tick.
