Mail Tribune 100, July 15, 1922 By Alissa Corman Jul 15, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago July 15, 1922 NO DEVELOPMENTS TODAY IN RECALL ELECTION UPROAR Neither side in the recall squabble had taken any action up to noon today, and none is expected before the first of the week. A local circulator of petitions for the nomination of Dr. M. Lowe for sheriff on the recall ticker was circulating among the crowd at the band concert Friday evening. The petition filed with the county clerk Thursday, and now claimed to be “only an endorsement” shows that a majority of the names on the petition resided in Ashland, which seems to be the hotbed of the recall sentiment. It is claimed by the supporters of the recall, that they have until Tuesday, July 18th to file the nominating petition, and it is likely the petition will be filed Monday. The injunction against the county clerk restraining him from taking any further steps to hold the special election called for July 29th, will probably be filed at the same time. Mrs. Stella J. Leavitt of Ashland, has addressed a letter to the Ashland Tidings, which was printed, apologizing for a previous letter, in which it was inferred that the county clerk had sent out circulars in behalf of Sheriff Terrill, and, for which the county clerk received several letters of condemnation. MERCHANTS FRAME PLANS FOR PUTTING UP OWN BUILDING A committee of merchants met at the county fair grounds last evening and after inspecting the buildings now under construction and being shown the location of the merchants industrial pavilion, they were enthusiastic in getting such a building started within the next two weeks. The proposed merchants building will be sixty feet wide and one hundred and thirty-two feet long. It will contain forty booths each having a frontage of twelve feet and a depth of ten feet. The building will be substantially constructed on cement foundations and the floor will be of cement. It will be of an architectural design and painted to harmonize with the other buildings being constructed on the grounds. The cost of this building will be $8000 and to secure the funds to construct same, the merchants committee will solicit the business man to lease space for a period of four years and pay a cash rental in advance for the entire period. A booth with a twelve foot frontage will cost at the rate of $50 per year, or a total cash payment of $200 gives a merchant complete control over such a space for four years. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
