Firefighters got the call at 7:05 p.m., and brush engines stationed at the Jackson County Expo were on the scene within minutes. Mike Calhoun, battalion chief with Fire District No. 3, said one home and several outbuildings were threatened by the advancing flames. Because the fire whipped through the tinder-dry brush, the home on Honeytree Lane will have a better defensible space around it, Calhoun said. “We told the owner his wildfire threat for the summer is done,” he said. Firefighters had the brush fire contained in about 25 minutes. Calhoun said the fire is close to the Denman Wildlife Refuge. On scene were two structure engines and four brush engines, Calhoun said. In addition. the Oregon Department of Forestry sent three brush engines, a water tender and a hand crew. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but Calhoun said authorities are looking into wiring on a power pole as well as a possible transient campfire. “There are a fair amount of transient camps back in there,” he said. Homeowners had garden hoses and shovels trying to protect their structures. Guy said he and a friend were busy digging to make sure the fire didn’t jump the road to his house, but he said firefighters had the situation under control in no time. “They were very, very quick,” he said.
