Phoenix lights up scoreboard against Rogue River ROGUE RIVER - An early lead gave the Rogue River baseball team a glimmer of hope that they may be able to snatch a victory away from Phoenix on Saturday. The home run, however, did the Chieftains (2-9 Skyline) in as the Pirates belted out five homers over both games of a doubleheader sweep. Bobby Dawson smacked a three-run shot in Game 1, leading Phoenix to a 7-3 win and the Pirates continued their long-ball assault in the nightcap, cruising to a five-inning, 27-0 win. Freshman Ryan Girodat's two-run blast gave Rogue River a 2-0 after one inning of play in the opener. And, with sophomore Danny Hunter on the mound, the Chieftains like their chances. "He's capable of beating you if you don't watch it," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler of the Rogue River lefty ace. "When they got those two runs you could see they thought they had a chance." Dawson quickly crushed the Chieftains' hopes with his three-run, mammoth shot that capped the decisive five-run third. In Game 2, Kyle Kaufman set the tone early for the Pirates (10-6, 8-3) with a leadoff home run. Travis Dunlap followed suit in an 11-run third inning with a one of his two homers on the day, a grand slam. Teammate Eric Kessler also added a roundtripper as the Pirates totaled 23 hits. "We got a lot of guys in today," said Hagler. "It was nice to see a lot of the younger guys get in and get a chance to play." Dunlap knocked in seven runs in the second game while Landon Rhodes had three hits for Phoenix. Kessler added four RBI to go along with three hits in three plate appearances and Kessler also had three hits. Ryan Emery had two hits, including a leadoff triple in the first inning, and Jared Larsen added two hits for the Cougars (7-8, 5-6 Skyline). In the nightcap, Jon Pope smacked a three-run single in a six-run fourth inning that broke open a close game. North Valley pushed across four runs in the seventh and had the tying run at first but couldn't get him home. Michael McDowell went 3-for-3 to lead the Cougars, while James Conway and Pope had two hits apiece. Drew Peterson and Scott Butterbaugh each had two hits for North Valley. Blank's fourth-inning three-bagger took a bad hop past the Hidden Valley centerfielder, allowing three runs to score and sealing the win for the Vikings. In the first game Brad Bailey tallied 10 strikeouts and only gave up one walk and three hits over nine innings to lead the Hornets (11-4, 9-2 Skyline) to a 1-0 win. Nick Telle had the game winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth for Henley. In the second game the Hornets scored eight runs in the six inning to win 14-4 in six innings. Scott Gelhardt went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game for the Hornets. In the doubleheader, the sixth-ranked Challengers (11-2, 6-0 Dist. 6) collected 26 hits to go with 23 Butte Falls errors. In the opener, Edwards struck out 11, while Nolan Roberts contributed four hits and three RBIs. Isaac Stephenson had a one-out double in the third inning for Butte Falls (7-5, 4-2). Cascade scored 10 runs in the first inning and 19 more in the fifth inning of the second game. Harvey fueled each rally with a pair of three-run doubles.
