As of now, due to low prices and poor weather, opening may be delayed until next week or beyond. What waters are providing the so-called "fresh" Dungeness? — Jim N., Medford While most of the coast’s crab fishermen remain at bay, two possible sources of fresh Dungeness exist for the area, says Nick Furman, executive director of the Oregon Dungeness Crab Commission. The Central California crabbers, largely out of San Francisco Bay, have been open since late November and those fresh crabs could be in local markets, Furman says. Another option are crabs from the tribal fishery off the northern Washington coast, where the tribes’ season opens 40 days before the Washington commercial season. Some crabs caught last year and frozen could also be in the market, but they must be marked as "previously frozen" crab, Furman says. The Northern California, Oregon and Washington commercial seasons were delayed until Dec. 31 to give ocean crabs more time to fill in with meat after molting. Though the season is open, crabbers and buyers have not reached an opening price and bad weather has kept Oregon crabbers in port so far, Furman says.
