"This is a very unusual case," Medford police Lt. Mike Moran said. He noted that banks are frequently the target of robbers, but are seldom hit by burglars. Bank employees discovered the crime about 6 a.m. Tuesday when they got to work at the branch at 3369 Crater Lake Highway, he said. Investigators think the burglary happened at 3 a.m. The burglar cut a hole roughly three feet in diameter in the bank’s wall. He likely used either hand tools or small, battery-operated power tools, Moran said. After crawling into the bank, the burglar "was able to thwart the alarm system," either with knowledge about the system or details about that bank branch, Moran said. Advertisement Then, he got into several secure locations where relatively small amounts of cash were kept inside the bank, Moran said. He didn’t get into the bank’s vault. "We’re working on a few theories," Moran said. He said the bank had repaired damage to the building and upgraded its security system. Anyone who saw anything suspicious near the bank early Tuesday or knows anything about the crime can call Detective Bill Ford at 774-2236.
