Roseburg dominates again at SOC swim meet Mail Tribune/Andrew Mariman Senior Kurt Vanderhoff of South Medford churns along doing the backstroke on this leg of the 200-yard individual medley Saturday during a Southern Oregon Conference three-way swimming meet at the Rogue Valley YMCA. It's a fact of life in Southern Oregon Conference swimming: If you're in the water with Roseburg, you're competing for second place. The latest evidence occurred Saturday, when the Indians - whose boys and girls teams have each won six straight district championships - dominated three-way meets against North Medford and South Medford at the Rogue Valley YMCA. The Roseburg boys won every event in scoring 178 points to South's 47 and North's 39. In the girls meet, the Indians claimed eight of 11 events and won with 151 points. North was second at 85 and South third at 70. "They are as strong as I've seen them," said North coach Dean Freeman, who has been with the Black Tornado for six years and previously coached Medford High for 14 years. "They've had a few more outstanding swimmers in past years, but as far the team, this is one of the strongest." The Indians had the spotlight, but North and South each had shining moments. In the girls meet, Jamie Erickson of the Tornado won the 100 freestyle in 1 minute, .73 seconds, and South's Lynea Loeffler triumphed in the 500 free in 5:38.92. The only other local victory in the meet was by the South girls' 200 free relay. The Panthers quartet of Karen Kralik, Jordan Sies, Nichole Fox and Loeffler clocked 2:03.08. Erickson, a senior, became North's first state-meet qualifier last year when she competed in the 200 free. She barely missed advancing as a wild-card entry in the 100 backstroke as well. Erickson will compete in four events at district next month, including two relays. "She's looking at the backstroke as probably her target event, if you wish," said Freeman. "She's a good freestyler, but we're waiting to get a little closer before we actually decide where she'll be entered. We want to get as much info as possible." Erickson also placed second in the 100 back. Her teammate, Erin Kulmac, produced seconds in the 100 butterfly and the 500 free, probably the toughest double in the meet given the time between events and the grueling nature of the 500. Loeffler's win in the 500 free, meanwhile, was particularly impressive because she continued to knock time off her lifetime best. In a meet Friday, the junior lowered her PR from 6:05 to 5:45. Saturday, she trimmed it to 5:38.92. "Lynea swam fantastic," said second-year Panthers coach Rich Hobbins. "That's incredible speed. It's hard for some people to understand how fast 5:38 in the 500 is." Loeffler also was second in the 100 breaststroke. For the North boys, Nick Stevenson was second in the 100 fly (1:08.97) and the 100 breast (1:11.41), and Dan Oliver was runner-up in the 50 free (24.89). It was Oliver's first loss in the 50 free and his second this year. "In a lot of years of coaching," said Freeman, "I've got to say that Dan is the fastest boy I've seen for the first length of the 50. He's got more speed out of the chute than any I've coached." Oliver has led at the first turn in every race, but he loses a little time in the turns. "There's something to work on there," said Freeman. "If we put things together, he'll definitely be one of the top three (at district)." South's boys got a second place from its 200 medley relay of Scott Goings, Cameron Guthrie, Kurt Vanderhoff and Thom Whiteaker. They clocked 2:02.29. Cottage Grove placed third with 70 points, followed by Hidden Valley with 55. In the girls meet, Marist scored 141, Phoenix 64, Cottage Grove 56 and Hidden Valley 41. For the Phoenix boys, Justin Heath and Jeff Stone won individual events, and the Pirates claimed two relays. Heath won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:16.95, and Stone took the 100 backstroke in 1:06.39. Stone was on the winning 200 medley relay with K.C. Cloyd, Jake Nelson and Dino Rossi. The time was 1:59.01. Heath was on the victorious 200 free relay with Tony Byrd, Nelson and Jess Holcomb that swam 1:41.27. In the girls meet, the Pirates' lone first came from Maggie Morefield, who won the 100 backstroke in 1:11.20.
