Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 25, 2009 at 12:35 AM Posted Aug. 25, 2009 at 12:35 AM » Social News O'BRIEN — A 48-acre wildfire along Lone Mountain Road in Josephine County destroyed at least three outbuildings Monday, and firefighters were expected to work through the night to try to contain it. Crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry, the U.S. Forest Service and the Rogue Valley Structural Task Force, made up of members of Jackson and Josephine county fire departments, had contained about 10 percent of the blaze as of late Monday, said Brian Ballou, an ODF spokesman. No one had been injured as of late Monday, but residents had been displaced. A roadblock was at the junction of Highway 199 and Lone Mountain Road, a highly traveled route to the Oregon Coast, Ballou said. The fire began to pick up and spread between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. because of high winds, threatening several houses along Lone Mountain Road, he said. By nightfall, crews had found a garage, a pump house and another outbuilding that had been consumed by the blaze, he said. Firefighters believed they managed to keep the fire away from homes, though crews had not penetrated every corner of the charred acreage, he said. The cooler night air late Monday helped to stop the spread of the fire, Ballou said. The fire about eight to 10 miles south of Cave Junction runs in a thin line about two-thirds of a mile along Lone Mountain Road, he said. The fire is mostly on the south side of the road, he said.
