MUSIC 'Stars on Stage' at the Craterian Theater Celebrate winners of Jackson County's District 8 music competition Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 8, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 8, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News A variety of instruments and voices will be heard when winners of Jackson County's District 8 solo music competition take to the Craterian Theater stage. Fourteen young soloists from schools in Jackson, Josephine and Klamath counties, along with two ensembles — a brass quintet from Phoenix High School and a percussion ensemble from Ashland High School — have been selected to compete in the Oregon Music Educators' state contest at the end of April at Pacific University in Forest Grove. The ensemble contest will be held April 29 and the soloists' contest will be April 30. This group of young talent will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. Central Ave., Medford. Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. A reception will be held in the lobby after the concert. Call 541-779-3000 or see www.craterian.org for information. "Stars on Stage: Celebrating State Soloists" will feature a range of vocals, wind and string instruments, marimba and piano. The brass quintet — MacKenzie Weaver, Tiffany Le, Camden Chose, Brody Bergstrom and Hannah Teague — will present "Bouree" and "Minuet" from George F. Handel's Royal Fireworks Suite. The AHS percussion ensemble features Nadine Akkerer, Ryan Freiheit, Griffen French, Gabriel Neimark, Nick Popp and Jackson Williams. Its music selection was not available at press time. Soprano Katie Schwarz of North Medford High School will sing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Alleluja"; soprano McKenzie Carter of South Medford High School will perform Aaron Copland's "Laurie's Song"; mezzo soprano Ruby Johnson, also of SMHS, will present Gabriel Faure's "Au bord de l'eau"; and SMHS alto Jordyn Pisons will sing Benedetto Marcello's cantata "Il mio bel foco." Also look for tenor Zacharry Burnett of NMHS singing Franz Schubert's "Fruhlingstraum," and baritone Isaac Bergstrom of PHS singing Michael Head's "Money, O!" The instrumentals will include a performance of Alec Wilder's "Effie Suite" by tuba player MacKenzie Weaver of PHS; the introduction to Camille Saint-Saens' Rondo Capriccioso by violinist Lily Dunlap of AHS; Faure's "Fantasia" by flutist Courtney Badura of NMHS; Malcolm Arnold's "Sonatina" by clarinetist Aaron Yu of NMHS; Gordon Jacobs' Concerto for Trombone by Geo Betus of PHS; and Mitchell Peters' "Yellow After the Rain" by marimba player Colleen Horan of PHS. Gabriel Neimark of AHS will perform solo on orchestral snare, and Shane Bechtel of NMHS will solo on mallet percussion. The selections of quality music literature were chosen to showcase the talent of each soloist. The concert is sponsored by Craterian Performances in an effort to offer students an opportunity to perform on a large stage before the state competition.
