Medford urologists offer prostate screening for $15 Medford's urologists are offering men age 40 and older a life-saving bargain next week: a two-part prostate cancer screening for $15. The screening, which would normally cost about $100, consists of a blood test and digital rectal exam. It will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25 at Rogue Valley Urology, 1698 E. McAndrews, Medford, and Sept. 26 at Urology Associates of Southern Oregon, 827 Spring St., Medford. Blood drawn during the exam will be tested for prostate-specific antigens. Results take a few days. The screening is the key to early detection of prostate cancer. Caught early, it can be treated much more successfully and result in a much higher rate of survival, said urologist Bruce Barrows. Controlled tests in Austria over the last few years have proven for the first time that such screening results in significantly reduced mortality rates for prostate cancer, he said. "It appears to be one of those things you should do every year," Barrows said. You should start at 40 if you have any family history of prostate cancer or are African-American, he said. If not, you should have annual exams from age 50 to 75. Barrows said medical progress in treatment of prostate cancer is significant with only rare occurrences of incontinence or impotence. Appointments are required and may be made by calling Rogue Valley Urology at 732-5466 and Urology Associates of Southern Oregon at 772-6600. Doctors doing the screening are Barrows, Tom Bul, Timothy Driver, Eric Martin and Henry Olson. The screening is sponsored jointly by Providence Medford Medical Center and Rogue Valley Medical Center.
