Torres takes home silver in Golden Gloves event Javier Torres, of Bulldog boxing, lost a 2-1 split decision to Oscar Dezmora of Kansas in the finals at the Junior Golden Gloves Nationals in Las Vegas Saturday. Torres took home the silver medal in the 125-pound weight class. Torres defeated Jason Bordere from Houston, Texas Friday to advance to the finals. United Way Golf tourney to be held Aug. 11 The second annual United Way Team Challenge Golf Tournament will be played at Eagle Point Golf Course on Aug. 11. The four-player scramble format will feature three handicapped flights, with prizes for low gross and net in each flight. Prizes also will be awarded for long drive and closest to the pin and in a separate putting contest and drawings. Funds raised in the tournament will go toward programs supported by the United Way of Jackson County. The tournament is limited to 36 teams. The entry fee is $300 per team and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, driving range privileges, tee prizes and lunch. The deadline for entries is Aug. 3. For more information, call 773-5339.
