Eric Allen Brooks, 27, was booked on charges of second-degree kidnapping and coercion, records show. Oregon State Police got a call about a possible kidnapping in Yreka at 3:39 p.m. Monday, so officers were keeping an eye out for the suspect's car. Brooks is suspected of taking his 26-year-old ex-girlfriend, her son and her daughter against their will. Both children are younger than 6, though exact ages were not available, police said. Brooks is the children's biological father, police said. An Oregon Department of Transportation crew member from Ashland spotted the vehicle involved in the incident at about 3:45 p.m. Monday headed north on Interstate 5 near milepost 8. Like police, ODOT employees sometimes keep an eye out for suspect vehicles on major highways, so they can report sightings to law enforcement. "It's not uncommon for their folks to monitor our radio systems and assist us as those things come up," OSP Lt. Josh Brooks said. ODOT officials followed the vehicle, giving OSP updates on the location until officers could pursue it. "He fell back and kind of followed several car lengths behind and reported the license plate number," ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming said. "Any kind of pursuit, we want to know about, because our guys could be in harm's way." Police pulled Brooks over near the Talent interchange and conducted a "high risk" stop, which involves police drawing their weapons in case the suspect is armed. Brooks was taken into custody without incident and remained in the jail Tuesday. The 26-year-old woman and her children were uninjured. Additional charges in Siskiyou County are pending, police said.
