NFL Ravens visit area where protests started Comment By The Baltimore Sun MailTribune.com By The Baltimore Sun Posted May. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM By The Baltimore Sun Posted May. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Several current and former Ravens took to social media this week to express sadness about the violence that has gripped Baltimore. On Thursday, they traveled south from Owings Mills to the northwest Baltimore communities most impacted by the week’s protests to assist in a food distribution program and lift the spirits in a community they said need it. Head coach John Harbaugh and 55 current and former Ravens — including current stars Joe Flacco, Dennis Pitta, Jimmy Smith and Justin Forsett — plus 30 coaches and team staff arrived at Matthew A. Henson Elementary School in west Baltimore on Thursday around 9:45 a.m. to spend time with the students and staff, and help distribute three trailers full of produce, canned food and household supplies to residents impacted by this week’s unrest. Former star linebacker Ray Lewis, who has called for an end to the violence, joined them. “We’re a little bit removed, so it’s tough to really get a grip on what’s actually going on,” Flacco said. “But the main thing we can do is help clean up, and help put a smile on people’s faces and that’s what we’re doing today.” Many of the players stayed at Newton to help break down the cases of food donated by Giant and the Maryland Food Bank and make packages for the neighbors to collect. Forsett brought the running back group to nearby Excel Academy, and a group including Harbaugh, Lewis, and Ravens director of player development Harry Swayne walked to Frederick Douglass High School to meet that community. Several Douglass students Monday afternoon were involved in encounters with the police, which was the start to the violence and looting that took over parts of the city following the funeral of Freddie Gray, who died while in police custody. Harbaugh and Lewis spoke with the Douglass football team on their visit, then returned back to Newton to meet with the Ravens and mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “When you see the Ravens, you see the Maryland Food Bank, you see members of the community stepping up, this is reflective of the true spirit of our city,” Rawlings-Blake said. “It’s unfortunate that it takes a crisis such as we saw for our true spirit to come out. This is what Baltimore is about.” Players who remained at Henson worked for several hours unloading boxes from the trailers, then unpacked cans of vegetables. Wide receiver Michael Campanaro camped out in a corner and bagged apples on the produce side of the room with a group of wide receivers and defensive backs. Punter Sam Koch and long snapper Morgan Cox stacked boxes of cereal and oatmeal along the opposite wall. And an assembly line of linemen, tight ends and coaches passed crates of water and juice from one end of the corner to another. The players signed hats for students and community members, and a small group including Flacco and Smith went classroom to classroom with the school’s principal to meet the students. Smith also walked through the line of waiting residents outside the school to speak with every person who came out. “It means everything (to me),” Smith said. “I understand the pain, obviously don’t condone the violence, but understand the pain. So talking to each one of them, you can see it in their face and see it in their eyes that they’re sad about how the city is run, about how they feel like they’re kind of being suppressed over here and not having any opportunities. I heard a lot of their stories and felt bad. I wish I could do more, but you know you can only do but so much.” Their presence was felt by both the students and the community members. As he carried an empty box outside of the gymnasium, 9-year-old Jaylin Washington told 11-year-old D’aubr’e Lewis, “My class is going to be so jealous when I tell them.” He beamed in his Newton T-shirt and Ravens hat. “It means a lot,” Sadie Brown, a 30-year-old resident of the neighborhood said. “It brings unity to the community. It’s going to touch a lot of people after what we’ve been through.” The nearby Save-A-Lot grocery store and CVS were looted and burned Monday, and another CVS they use was badly damaged, Brown said. Many of the Ravens players have been working out at the team facility following the start of last week’s voluntary conditioning program. Lewis, who now works for ESPN after playing for 17 seasons with the Ravens, was originally supposed to be in Chicago to contribute to Thursday’s broadcast of the first round of the NFL draft. However, he was given permission by the network to remain in the Baltimore area, where he has vowed to help do his part to quell some of the unrest. The Ravens have been discussing ways to help out the city since the violence broke out. Due to the city-wide curfew, the team canceled its annual draft party, scheduled for Thursday at M&T Bank Stadium.
