Raymond Clark Green, 42, didn't contest charges of unlawful manufacture of a destructive device, unauthorized use of a vehicle and resisting arrest. He appeared Friday in Jackson County Circuit Court via television monitor from the Jackson County Jail to enter the no contest pleas. Green was sentenced to two years prison time. However, he was previously sentenced to two years in prison for probation violations on two prior burglary convictions. Green will serve both two-year sentences at the same time — resulting in no additional time in prison on the new charges. According to a police affidavit, Green was seen by a witness wiping his fingerprints off the steering wheel of a car, then leaving it in the driveway of a vacant house in the 1100 block of West Ninth Street in Medford. When police tried to apprehend Green, he ran away and kept reaching into his pockets. He then squared off with officers, still reaching into his pockets, and was hit by police with a Taser. Green continued to resist arrest but was eventually put in handcuffs, the affidavit said. Police found a knife in each of Green's front pants pockets, as well as a black light bulb filled with a significant amount of gasoline or diesel fuel with a fuse sticking out of it, the affidavit said. Defense attorney Michael Kellington said the object was a Christmas ornament filled with paper that smelled of gasoline. Green, who was homeless, was keeping the paper dry inside the ornament, Kellington said. "If you've ever been camping, dry tinder is like gold," Kellington said. "I would characterize this as something to start a campfire." Kellington said he tried to convince the Jackson County District Attorney's Office not to charge Green with unlawful manufacture of a destructive device. "While this might meet the definition of a destructive device, I don't think it fits the facts," Kellington said. "When you think of the word 'bomb,' this is not a bomb. It's something you would light a fire with." In September 2014, Green entered a plea of no contest to charges of first-degree burglary and unlawful use of a weapon for stealing $200 in shoes, $30 in groceries and a Quiznos sandwich shop T-shirt from a Medford house, according to court records and a police affidavit. Green left behind his Social Security card and insurance cards in the house, the affidavit said. A friend of the burglary victim saw Green wearing the Quiznos shirt and chased him, but Green pulled a knife on the friend and threatened to stab him, the affidavit said. Also in September 2014, Green pleaded no contest to first-degree burglary after he was found inside another house with a missing key to the structure, according to court records and a police affidavit.
