Oregon State Police Lt. Bill Fugate identified the driver as sheriff's Deputy Jesse Ainsworth. Ainsworth told investigators he thought he hit a deer while driving north on I-5 near milepost 40 outside of Gold Hill. Ainsworth told investigators that he didn't realize his vehicle had struck a person until after he stopped and discovered 35-year-old Eliso L. Arias, according to OSP. Arias, who was camping in the area and was reportedly involved in a disturbance, was intoxicated and wearing dark clothing when he walked between the two northbound lanes, according to OSP. "It's unfortunate the deputy never saw him," Fugate said. "I'm not sure anybody else would have, either." Arias, who suffered what police initially said were serious but not life-threatening injuries, was taken to Providence Medford Medical Center, where he was no longer listed as a patient Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Ainsworth has not been placed on paid leave during the OSP investigation and has remained on patrol duty, Sheriff Corey Falls said.
