Jared Scott Carvalho, 20, of the 2400 block of Salyer Street, Medford, pleaded guilty in Jackson County Circuit Court to weapons charges and a new lesser assault charge for his involvement in the July 30 drive-by shooting that struck an 18-year-old woman in the pelvis while she was outside a Medford apartment complex. The agreement with prosecutors is in exchange for testimony against alleged shooter Gino Malique King, 20, of Central Point. Deputy District Attorney Jeremy Markiewicz asked that Carvalho's bail be reduced to $50,000. Carvalho will be sentenced on the reduced charges following completion of agreement requirements, such as attending all court dates and providing accurate testimony, currently slated for July. Markiewicz told the court he believes King fired four shots at a group of four people talking in the parking lot of an apartment complex just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday, July 30, at 402 S. Columbus Ave., Medford. One bullet hit the 18-year-old woman, entering and exiting the victim's body without hitting any major organs. Four .45-caliber casings were found at the scene. Carvahlo was arrested the next day after he was found driving recklessly in west Medford in a vehicle that matched witness descriptions, court documents show. Carvalho told police that he, King and two passengers targeted the group of people because of a fight between King's gang, known as THB, and a rival gang, known as VDF. Court documents show that Carvahlo admitted to police that he knew King was going to shoot the group of gang members when he drove the vehicle. He also admitted to driving the vehicle past the group twice, slowing his car down on the second pass so King could shoot. Carvalho pleaded guilty to three felony charges of unlawful use of a weapon, and a charge of second-degree assault, a Measure 11 crime. If Carvalho complies with the prosecution's requirements, he'll serve 5 years and 10 months in prison on the reduced charges. Markiewicz emphasized to Carvalho that if he fails to appear at any court dates or provide testimony, prosecutors will add the four attempted murder charges and first-degree assault charges. King was arrested in November in Ohio. He allegedly jumped out of a second-story balcony in a Dayton, Ohio, apartment complex as U.S. marshals went door to door looking for him. King faces four attempted murder charges, a first-degree assault charge and four charges of unlawful use of a weapon. King remains in the Jackson County Jail without bail.
