LIVE MUSIC L.A. rockers The Relationship play Howiee's Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 17, 2015 at 9:00 AM Posted Apr. 17, 2015 at 9:00 AM » Social News It's 2015 and rock ‘n’ roll is more alive than ever, which means it's time for The Relationship to step back into the spotlight with a new single — "Oh Allen," released April 8 on Burger Records — and its full range of new songs ready for the band's spring tour. The L.A. band formed in 2006 by singer and guitarist Brian Bell (Weezer, Space Twins) and lead guitarist Nate Shaw (Die Hunns, U.S. Bombs) with Eric J. on keys, Jason Hiller on bass and Blair Sinta on drums . In late 2010, the group released its eponymous debut album on Golden State Records. Later, Bell and Shaw called on some old friends to fill out a new rhythm section for the band: Bassist Jon LaRue, a native of L.A. who'd been performing on the East Coast, was a songwriting partner with The Strokes' co-founder Albert Hammond Jr., and New Jersey transplant Anthony Burulcich, who'd just returned from a long stretch of touring as drummer for Morrissey and The Bravery. This re-energized Relationship is a better match for Bell's preternatural pop precision and Shaw's brilliant lead-guitar work. The result is an evolution of sound born from such bands as The Kinks, Cheap Trick, The Clash and others — and a new take on classic rock 'n' roll. The Relationship will play at 9 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Howiee's on Front, 16 N. Front St., Medford. Atlanta-based rock group Gringo Star will open the show. Tickets cost $10 in advance, $13 the day of the show. Call 541-773-5767. The Burger Records single is only a glimpse of the music The Relationship has ready, combining LaRue's and Burulcich's New York City aesthetic with Bell's and Shaw's original rock as high art concept — then soaking it in Southern California sunshine. The A side, "Oh Allen," is a storming, bittersweet ode to the path not taken, while the flip side, "Young Temptations, is a hooky autobiography supercharged with a stadium-ready chorus and wry literary lyrics. " 'Oh Allen' is a buddy song about two long-time friends who were once inseparable," Bell said in a press release when the song premiered on the Billboard charts. "Allen follows his dreams of becoming an artist while his friend conforms to society's demands yet cheers him on as 'one of the faces in the crowd.' The song resonated with Nate and me because we were actually the character of Allen, or what Allen represented to us, while friends and family, as supportive as they must be, are the ones speaking of us in an 'Oh, that Nate and Brian' sort of way." A new full album by The Relationship is nearly ready, cut to analog tape at L.A.'s celebrated recording studio The Village, where everyone from The Beach Boys to Neil Young found a home to craft their hit songs. The theme of the new album, Bell says, will be youth, not just the energy and irrepressible drive that comes from being young and playing rock 'n' roll guitar, but the romance, melancholy and triumph over tragedy that can happen when a band decides to make music its way — no matter what.
