Congratulations to The Homeless Task Force and Set Free Christian Fellowship for working towards such a retreat. However, the comment about a tiny house/shed (with no water or electricity) costing $4,000 is not really correct. We built a great shed for $300 in materials. Also, I read recently about a teenager in Southern California who is building tiny houses on wheels for the homeless at a cost of $500. She was inspired by an elderly woman who was sleeping in front of her house. Perhaps Set Free and the task force could team up with Habitat for Humanity to build such structures with partly donated materials from Home Depot or Lowe's. Jessica Bryan Ashland No public benefit Referencing the proposed Sams Valley power station story Monday, the situation is sad for the couple's dreams but there is some offsetting public value or benefit to the general population in the area. However, the proposed 240-mile Jordan Cove LNG Pacific Connector pipeline for gas export offers no benefits to Oregonians at all. Worse than building on land they own, like Pacific Power, the pipeline owners will cross 700 private parcels and seize private property for the right of way using eminent domain rights granted to them by the U.S. government. Eminent domain seizure is supposed to be offset by public benefit, not for the private profits of a foreign corporation. Oregonians get a massive clearcut across the state threatening water quality and recreation on 400-plus water crossings, higher natural gas prices (by exporting our natural gas), the risk of gas explosions in the middle of fire country, increased air pollution from the Coos Bay operation (it will the second largest CO2 emitter in the state), and worsening global warming by Asia burning all that fossil fuel. Write Gov. Kate Brown now and tell her to take a stand for the benefit of all Oregonians, not foreign corporations! Brian Comnes Ashland Suicide understanding The article on suicide in the July 26 paper is timely and helpful, considering the problem’s magnitude of over 40,000 per year (American Foundation for Prevention of suicide) Another article might help understand suicide from the point of view of the victims and those left behind. As a veteran who has spoken with other veterans individually and in groups as well as a friend of those who have lost children, I would like to also hear from other practitioners who have dealt directly with suicide, ideation and/or aftermath. Survivors must deal with grief and often survivor’s guilt. Not usually understood is that suicide is not selfless, but is unintentionally selfish, and that survivors (often children) are more likely to also commit suicide. Knowing these facts and others might help someone to rethink their plans when they are in crisis. The long crisis line number (1-800-273-8255) is difficult to remember, especially for someone in crisis! I am currently spinning wheels with the national VA and the FCC (Proceeding No. RM-11746) for a shorter, more easily remembered version, like 3 or 4 digits — similar to 911 — and have presented them with a petition that now has over 57,000 signatures:  bit.ly/1x0sJWM .
