Illinois Valley keeps pace in race CAVE JUNCTION � The games are getting bigger each week for Illinois Valley, and the Cougars are responding in kind. Illinois Valley, getting some long-awaited big plays from its offense and another stellar effort on defense, stifled Phoenix 33-14 Friday in Skyline Conference football. The win, coupled with losses by Mazama and Hidden Valley, leaves the Cougars in a second-place tie with Mazama, both with 3-1 league marks. "This late in the season, it�s probably as good as we�ve been sitting in a long time," said Illinois Valley coach Perry Sheehan. "We�re happy about that, but we�re definitely not satisfied." The Cougars visit Mazama next Friday. "That will be bigger than this one, and I thought this one was big," said Sheehan. One down note on the evening was that Mike Peterson, in the midst of a breakout offensive performance, was injured late in the first half and didn�t return. He went up for an interception and came down on his back. He had the injury checked at a hospital but his status is unknown. Peterson ripped off touchdown runs of 32 and 50 yards, in addition to a 1-yarder, and tallied 109 yards in nine carries. "He was playing really well," said Sheehan. "We had been asking for big plays from him and (Mike) McDowell, and it was finally happening." McDowell, who had a 35-yard touchdown catch, caught two passes for 65 yards and ran six times for 58. Illinois Valley also got a 92-yard fumble recovery from Ryan Miller. Phoenix�s touchdowns came on a 3-yard run by Eric Kessler and a 4-yard run by Bobby Dawson. Brian Kinsman led Henley with 97 yards on the ground on seven carries while quarterback Frank Gauntz threw for 169 yards on 10-of-19 passing. Henley led 32-7 at the half. The Knights (4-2, 2-2 Skyline) got a 125 yards rushing from Jesse Stumbo, including a 28-yard touchdown run, and built a 21-0 lead before Hidden Valley got on the scoreboard. North Valley�s Cole Parmelee caught a 37-yard scoring strike from Tim Cunha and Colin Beard, who ran for 73 yards on only nine carries, rambled in from the 11. Nick Mason scored both Hidden Valley (3-3, 2-2 Skyline) touchdowns on runs of 1 and 2 yards. He rushed for 113 yards on 24 carries. North Valley also got a 32-yard field goal from Erik Richardson. Rogue River remained winless on the season at 0-6 overall and 0-5 in conference play. Skyline A League BUTTE FALLS 42, ELKTON 16 � At Elkton, Butte Falls recorded its first Skyline A League victory as Nick Rodgers and Mark Lunsford each scored a pair of touchdowns. Lunsford scored on runs from the 4- and 11-yard lines, and Rodgers scored from 2 and 6 yards out. The Loggers (2-3, 1-2 Sky A) also got a 55-yard interception return for a touchdown from David Hoel and a 40-yard scoring catch by Tommy Lunsford from Rodgers. Mark Lunsford had 97 yards on 13 carries and Rodgers hit 10 of 21 passes for 136 yards. He was picked off twice. Butte Falls� defense was buoyed by linebackers Issac Stephenson, Mark Lunsford and Rodgers. Gary Williamson of Elkton ran for 155 yards and both scores. Prospect scored 22 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take a 22-20 lead. Griffith broke for a 72-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-17 late in the fourth quarter. On Prospect�s ensuing possession, Griffith intercepted a pass and took it 72 yards to secure the win. Griffith also had touchdown runs of 33 and 3 yards. Zach Gordon was 17-for-29 passing for 207 yards for Prospect (3-3, 3-1 Skyline A). David Maloy scored on a 26-yard run for Prospect and a 65-yard reception.
