Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 15, 2005 Three women charged in barroom bat attack By ANITA BURKE Mail Tribune Three Jackson County women have been charged with first-degree assault after a barroom dispute ended in a baseball bat attack that left the victim with eight staples in her head, speech difficulties and short-term memory loss, Medford police said. Police are still seeking another woman investigators claim was involved in the attack, which happened in February, Lt. Tim George said. Police arrested two suspects, Seresa Anne Whitley, 31, and Brooke Elizabeth Hasha, 26, both of Ashland, on Dec. 8 on warrants charging them with first- and second-degree assault. Another suspect, Sarah Kathleen Campbell, 29, of Phoenix, was arrested in March on charges of first-, second- and third-degree assault and menacing and is set to face trial next month. "This is a crazy, convoluted case, but there’s no question there was a serious assault and a baseball bat was involved," George said as he reviewed investigators’ case notes. The trouble started Friday, Feb. 18, when three women got into a fight at High Waters Night Club & Lounge on Main Street in downtown Medford and were asked to leave the club, George said. The next night, the same women were involved in another disturbance at the club. Advertisement Investigators say that early Sunday morning, Feb. 20, Whitley, Campbell and a woman police are still looking for went to the home of a 29-year-old Medford woman they had clashed with at High Waters. They caught up with her in a parking lot in the 3000 block of Sheridan Court, near her home, and assaulted her with a bat. The victim had a serious cut on her head that required eight staples to close and, in the weeks following the attack, she suffered neurological problems including speech difficulties and memory loss, George said. "This is an unusual case to have women assaulting women with this level of weapon and injury," George said. Although police arrested Campbell within weeks after the fight, piecing together details of the case against the other women was difficult because of the number of people involved, some of whom had left the area, he said. He didn’t disclose the cause of the initial conflict. Hasha wasn’t at the scene of the attack, but investigators believe she helped plan it, George said. She is now in the Jackson County Jail on $255,000 bail. Bail for Whitley was set at $50,000 and a request by the district attorney’s office to raise that amount was denied Wednesday, court records show. She posted bail and was released to stay with her parents. Whitley has a lengthy criminal history and was accused of participating in a kidnapping and robbery last year in which the male victim was threatened with a knife. Campbell also has a court record.
