That is also the name of a book by William Catton published in 1980. It and a sequel titled "Bottleneck" (2009) deal with the more general overshoot of our whole economy. They provide a counterbalance to the incredible load of commercial and political hype that dominates public discussion these days. Are many members of our younger generations able to read and comprehend that material, and maybe see a connection between it and the world in which they have grown up? Globalization has guaranteed that the way U.S. citizens respond will not be the determining factor, perhaps not even a major one, in what happens next. Will we be able to make an orderly retreat from excess, or will we lash out in a gigantic economic (and possibly military) tantrum? The competition for quick profits, the pursuit of political power and the gullibility of too many consumers have put us in a very precarious position. Dean Ayers, Medford LNG brings no public good Thanks, to the four writers of the "Pipeline Project" and their fair-handed reporting, we now know that there is no public good served to the American people by exporting our energy resources to China. Thanks especially for mentioning the 1.2 million jobs that will be lost when domestic energy prices skyrocket as a result. Impressive accountability when compared with local television news reporters, who seem almost giddy as they repeat the grossly incorrect mantra "badly needed resources for our region." Currently, Coos Bay utilizes less than 12 percent of the natural gas supply provided by a pipeline completed seven years ago. They need more LNG in Coos Bay almost as much as they need more sea water. In Washington and California and even Clatsop County, Ore., where the county commissioners voted to stop the pipeline from being built, they saw through this sham. Believing that a path for the pipeline through Southern Oregon would provide less resistance, "Williams" campaigns heavily with misinformation, wagering that we are people who would so cheaply sell out the future of our nation, who have no loyalty to our countrymen, no recognizable conscience and who can be manipulated and deceived. They are wrong. Ray's "Stuff the Truck" donors went out of their way to break the record; city of Phoenix administration and Public Works held great food drive contests; Ray's shoppers contributed $500 to our Community Kitchen; plus Creekside Mobile Home Park and generous cash donors extend our shopping dollars. We squeeze every nickel twice! Whew! We are now an ACCESS Supplemental Pantry: We may receive donated goods from the Oregon Food Bank and purchase goods at greatly reduced prices to fill in the hold-our-breath days between major donations.
