Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 22, 2005 Student arrested after bringing gun to school A 15-year-old student was arrested Thursday at South Medford High School after bringing an unloaded gun to campus. The boy did not intend to use the weapon at school, according to a letter sent from South Medford Principal Kevin Campbell to students and parents. But he did have six rounds of ammunition in his pocket, said Medford police Lt. Tim George. "There were no threats and no indications that he was going to be using the handgun at school," George said. "But you can’t bring a firearm to school, number one." The boy was first seen on Wednesday displaying the .38-caliber handgun, which was stolen from his father, George said. School officials received a tip at about 8:40 a.m. Thursday about the weapon’s presence, said South Medford Assistant Principal Hal Jones, who would only identify the tipster as a "community member." The school’s resource officer, Phil Steigleder, found the boy in his classroom at about 9:05 a.m. and confiscated the weapon, which was in the student’s waistband, George said. Steigleder immediately took the student into custody on charges of first-degree theft, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm in a public building. He was lodged in the Jackson County Juvenile Detention facility. The arrest did not disrupt the school day, and students had no knowledge of what transpired, according to Campbell’s letter. "We worked with the school keeping it as low-key as possible," said Medford police Lt. Mike Moran.
