Michele was born July 12, 1946 in Santa Monica, Calif. She lived and attended elementary and high school in Canoga Park, Calif. with her parents and younger sister and brother. Michele graduated from California State University at Northridge (CSUN) in June of 1968, and married Jeffery A. Applen September 14, 1968. Her husband went to the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Va. after graduating from CSUN in August 1969. She joined him there in 1970, and they enjoyed their life together as a Marine family. Michele was the perfect person and wife for a career Marine officer. She always rolled with the flow and adapted herself to the next new assignment. Michele has two sons, Christopher Casey Applen and Benjamin Eric Applen. Casey and his wife Brittany have two sons, Trenton (4) and Maxwell (2). She was especially proud of her sons and loved her daughter in-law and grandsons more than she could adequately express. She was fulfilled and pleased being Nana to her grandsons. Michele moved with her family to Medford in 1991 after her husband retired from the USMC. She had her teaching credential prior to moving to Medford, and upon arrival, began substitute teaching. She was hired as fulltime teacher at Central Point Elementary in the mid-1990s and retired from that school in 2008. She continued substitute teaching during retirement because she missed her friends at work, as well as missed being in the classroom. Michele was a dedicated and generous teacher. She routinely worked more than sixty hours a week and spent as much as one thousand dollars a year of her own wages on her classroom and students. Michele was professional and hardworking. She was highly regarded as a teacher and friend. Her dedication was often rewarded with loving embraces from former students and parents of former students. One parent told her that her son, now in the Air Force, still remembered her as his favorite teacher. Michele loved her students, her 'posse', and her teaching partners. She often smoothed her husband’s rough edges to his benefit and curiosity. Her gentle laughter and warmth will be missed. She was a diamond in what would otherwise have been a coal mine. She leaves a big, empty space in our hearts. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, March 4, 2016 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 675 Black Oak Dr., Medford. The graveside service will take place at a time and date to be determined, at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Eagle Point. Ore.
