Crispin, Howard have big days at GPD GRANTS PASS -- Sunday turned out to be a pretty good day for jockey Joe Crispin and trainer Sam Howard. Crispin road to four victories on the day while Howard saddled three winners on the card in front of 1,047 in attendance. Crispin started things off with a victory in the fourth race atop Emerald Bay going 4 furlongs and followed with a win aboard quarter horse Beda B Fast in the 350-yard fifth race. Crispin completed the day with two more wins in the final two races. He rallied Mr. One Ring to the wire of a length in front for trainer Howard in the 5 furlongs eighth race then finished in the winners circle 25 minutes later with a wire-to-wire winner Light Joe Fire in the 5 furlongs nightcap. Howard had a day to remember, as he saddled winners in the second, seventh and eighth races. In addition to Mr. One Ring, trainer Howard saddled Quarter Trial to a very game win, prevailing by a neck in the second race. Jockey Shawna Barber, who took four races on opening day, guided Bearka to the wire in front-running fashion to win the 5 furlong feature for fillies and mares for trainer Howard. Tad Skaggs also road to two wins, with back-to-back victories in the second and third races with a $1,600 and $1,700 purses, respectively. Skaggs also grabbed second in the first race and third in race No. 4. Jockey Zia Mills made her first career start as a jockey, piloting Give Em L to a second-place finish in the seventh race. The quarterhorse Grants Pass Derby for 3YO going 400 yards closed with seven nominations while the Southern Belle Handicap for fillies and mares going 6 furlongs closed with 11.
