Harry Reid's  comments on May 12, calling the NFL “racist”: If he would just look at the etymology of the name of state of Oklahoma, is he going to go after our government to change the name? With all of the controversy on changing mascot names and logos of the Native American-named teams, the government will need to change the state of Oklahoma's name also. Let’s stop this nonsense and work on getting back our country. Etymology: The name Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw phrase okla humma, literally meaning red people. Choctaw Chief Allen Wright suggested the name in 1866 during treaty negotiations with the federal government regarding the use of Indian territory, in which he envisioned an all-Indian state controlled by the United States Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Equivalent to the English word Indian, okla humma was a phrase in the Choctaw language used to describe the Native American race as a whole. Oklahoma later became the de facto name for Oklahoma Territory, and it was officially approved in 1890, two years after the area was opened to white settlers. Eddie Adamson Medford Gray far from innocent S.M. Rosen's description of Freddie Gray as "a black youngster" cries out for clarification. Freddie Gray was not an innocent black "choir boy;" far from it! He was a 25-year-old drug user and dealer with a long record of more than 18 arrests for drug violations, burglary, assault, etc., beginning in 2007 and likely earlier, although his juvenile records are sealed and thus unavailable. And while not all these arrests led to a convictions, the volume and frequency of his running afoul of the law are a reasonable indication that he was nothing more than a black thug and certainly not an innocent "youngster" by any stretch of the imagination. A reasonably full listing of these arrests can be found at the following URL: http://www.snopes.com/politics/crime/freddiegray.asp. I fully agree that the death of this young man, notwithstanding his criminal history, occurred under questionable circumstances, but I also stress that the police officers involved must be considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. To do less would be to violate the involved officers' constitutional rights and succumb to mob rule. Dr. Gaither B. Everett Medford Finish finishing project Bravo to the Disabilities Recreation Project for the fun-filled, 14th annual trout fishing tournament at the Expo ponds May 16. What fun for everyone! Oh, and a big thank you, ODFW, for planting some awesome, huge, rainbow trout just before the event to make it even more exciting for everyone involved. Everyone caught fish, and some were close to 3 pounds. I heard that the Disabilities Recreation Project, a 501(c)3 nonprofit group, has been working on making that area completely accessible to wheelchairs, thus making that area accessible and full of possibilities and recreation, for everyone, for some years now. However, DRP has been told to stop the work after the sewer lines have been put in and the water lines have been put in. Come on folks, let's get this project back on the move again and get it completed so that next year even more people from this fine community can enjoy the Expo ponds and all that this area has to offer, year round, of course, with a few trout tournaments here and there. I've lived in this area for 34 years now and have fished from my wheelchair most all of my life.
