Friday Sep 1, 2017 at 10:31 AM Sep 1, 2017 at 10:36 AM The 100-mile Pine To Palm endurance run has been canceled because of wildfires burning in the region. Race Director Hal Koerner wrote on his Facebook page earlier this week that the race from Williams to Ashland, which would've been in its eighth year, was canceled to protect runners' safety. "We love this race and could never in good conscious put runners, crew, and volunteers at risk of harm or bad health at this time," the post reads. "I have spoken with a number of race directors and experienced runners over the last week to help me come to the conclusion of canceling the run this year because in the end we want you to enjoy this race and come away with an exceptional experience. I think most of you will understand that we cannot provide nor guarantee that at this time." The race was to begin at 6 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, and cover more than 20,000 feet of climb, with three climbs of 7,000 feet, and afford views of Mount Shasta and Mount McLoughlin. "The first thirty miles are in serious jeopardy and it’s possible that these fires will encroach on more P2P territory considering the trajectory and fueling conditions that are to come over the next few weeks," Koerner wrote. "The forecast has triple digit heat for the weekend and continued wind patterns like the ones we are witnessing now. There really is no end in sight at the moment." Koerner offered a full credit to registered runners for the 2018 event and said he was still working out the details. "Please know I hope to see all of you next year and that I feel your pain," he wrote. "My first 100 miler I walked the final 20 miles through fresh smoke and fire to get my buckle and would never want to do the same thing again. I was also turned away from defending my Western States title in 2008, so I know what dreams the threat of fire can squash. I want you all to know I kept a very level head coming to this conclusion because I have so many great people helping me through it, I just wish we were the ones that ultimately got to make it.
