After a neighbor reported a disturbance, Medford police found the three men, along with a woman under the influence of heroin who was attempting to revive them at 11:38 p.m. at the Valli Hai Motel, 1034 Court St., Medford. An unidentified male fled when police arrived, in a scene Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau described as "chaotic." Officers quickly administered naloxone, also known as Narcan, a medication that reverses the effects of heroin overdoses. "We used the naloxone that we had," Budreau said. Mercy Flights and Medford Fire-Rescue also responded to the incident with naloxone kits. Each of the two responding officers had one dose. Medford police have been carrying the kits in their patrol cars since January. The medication works by preventing the central nervous system from shutting down in the event of an opioid overdose, allowing the victim to breathe normally. The medication has no effects if opioids are not present. One of the men stopped breathing, and he remained unconscious Tuesday at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford, according to Budreau. "One individual took three doses because he was so out of it," Budreau said of the overdose victim who stopped breathing. "Once they administered the Narcan, he started breathing. "These three individuals, they were right on the cusp of dying," he said. Budreau said Medford police have been using Narcan regularly. Prior to getting the medication, officers could only perform CPR and wait for paramedics to arrive. "It's pretty consistent that we've used it once every month since we started the program and had multiple lives saved as a result of that," Budreau said. Three overdoses in the same location is unusual, Budreau said. "Very bizarre case. This will be the first time to my knowledge we had three unconscious individuals." Budreau said police haven't seen evidence of increased heroin use or a stronger variety of heroin on the streets. "It's mainly a warning that you're never sure what you're going to get," Budreau said. Some heroin is lower potency because it has been cut with other ingredients, and users acclimate their dosage based on it. "Some will be 'regular' potency," Budreau said. "The results can be deadly." No charges have been filed in the case, but officers collected evidence from the scene. "We're going to let these individuals recover, then continue our investigation," Budreau said.
