I'd expected a bit more caution and common sense of our new city council members. Did the $250 fines make their eyes glaze over? V. Handel, Medford Walden made right decision I believe that Congressman Walden and the Republican leadership made the right decision to move on from the Obama administration’s executive order legalizing the status of illegal aliens residing in our country. As a conservative, I believe the order is unconstitutional and that the stay issued by a Texas federal judge will be upheld. The issue will eventually be settled by the Supreme Court. Homeland Security is essential. It was obvious that withholding funds for the executive order was never going to pass in the Senate as our Republican majority is not large enough to override a filibuster. It should be noted that Congressman Walden voted twice in the House to defund the amnesty portion of the bill, which would have been vetoed by the White House if it had cleared the Senate. Tilting at windmills is an exercise in futility. How many of us realize that by not funding Homeland Security, 200,000 department employees deemed to be critical to the nation’s safety would be required to work without pay until funding was approved. Would you like that to happen to you? True conservatives consider such ramifications. Congressman Walden is one of them. Valerie Smullen, Central Point Clean energy jobs The Citizens Utility Board (whose mission is to protect ratepayers) and others are urging the passage of state Coal to Clean legislation. As currently drafted, it will direct Oregon’s investor-owned utilities like Pacific Power to stop importing coal-generated energy and to replace it with cleaner energy like wind and solar that can create far more jobs in Oregon by 2025. 33 percent of our energy in Oregon comes from coal and those plants now require pollution control measures. This legislation sends a market signal to energy investors that we are not interested in paying for coal plant infrastructure and that it is time to proceed with the numerous clean energy projects waiting to be built. If Oregon rate payers are going to pay for energy infrastructure, it should be clean and create jobs here. To date, Oregon’s renewable energy sector has invested over $9 billion, creating over 5,000 jobs in construction and operations and resulting in $110 million in public revenue. Oregon’s solar, wind and wave energy resources could provide enough electricity to meet our needs and even position us to export energy over time. Support SB 477 and HB 2729. Tonia Moro, Medford Pitts rails against Fox Leonard Pitts Jr., whose columns regularly appear in this space (e.g., Feb. 11 and March 11), has a thing about Fox News and its viewers. He illiberally asserts that Fox News “is not a real news-gathering organization but, rather, the propaganda arm of an extreme right wing that grows ever more cult-like and detached from reality” that gives its viewers “what they want to hear” — a rather condescending indictment considering the millions of well-informed Fox News viewers. His latest target is Bill O’Reilly, described by Pitts as “a serial fabulist.” If he’s right, O’Reilly should share the fate of Brian Williams. But let’s see better proof than Pitts offers. The obvious problem is that Pitts disagrees with the admittedly conservative editorial policy of Fox News, and he apparently yearns for the bygone days when there was no counterweight to the views of the dominant liberal media. Yes, Fox News advances a conservative worldview, but an informed public needs to be exposed to that view and to the news stories the so-called mainstream media choose not to cover. Partisans such as Pitts would rather try to discredit and wrongly throttle the messenger.
