Dakota By CHRIS CONRAD Mail Tribune Local reaction to South Dakota’s abortion ban was divided predictably into two distinct camps. Jackson County Right-to-Life President Byran Platt believes the ruling is a step in the right direction. He sees the challenge to Roe v. Wade as an attempt to allow individual states to determine whether abortion should be made illegal. "Then, of course, there are 50 battles to be fought instead of one," Platt said. Previous anti-abortion bills in other states have contained loose language that have made them weak and easy to defeat. Platt noted the bill in South Dakota was drafted with the input of attorneys who oppose abortion. Advertisement "I’m going to be an optimist and say this time it was done right," he said. On the other side of the issue, abortion advocates are concerned, said Paul Anderson, spokesman for Medford’s Planned Parenthood. "Obviously we’re discouraged and distressed that these laws are being passed in conservative states," Anderson said. One of his main concerns is the blow such laws could deal to women’s safety. He fears the ruling will send women seeking an abortion to sketchy facilities where they may not receive the proper medical care. "If we create a situation such as what’s happening in South Dakota, it will resort to illegal activity," he said. Anderson also fears the impact such a ruling would have on civil liberties. He argues that the landmark Roe v. Wade case was based on the fact that the country has not come to a scientific, philosophical or theological consensus as to whether life beings at birth or conception. "All this legislation is designed to do is impose one party’s view of when a fetus is considered a human being," he added.
