The No. 7 Beavers are going to get each team’s best from here on out. OSU was tested for the first 18 minutes on Saturday by a USC team that was 3-5 in the Pac-12 Conference. It wasn’t until a 6-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half that the Beavers had the separation they needed. An 18-2 explosion to open the second half put the game out of reach. So there is little doubt the Beavers, who at 19-1 overall and 9-0 in the Pac-12 are off to their best start in program history, will look past any team, starting with UCLA at 7 p.m. tonight. “I think they’re a scary team just like (USC) is,” fifth-year coach Scott Rueck said of UCLA following Saturday’s 68-35 blowout of USC. “Any team that has that much talent and athleticism they can beat anybody on any night. So we need another focused effort.” The Bruins, despite a nationally-ranked freshman class, have struggled to an 8-12 overall record and are 4-5 in the Pac-12 after a 67-65 loss at Oregon on Saturday. The Beavers won the first meeting, 65-47 at Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 3. However, the Bruins played that game without freshman Jordin Canada, who is third on the team with 10.6 points per game and is netting 12.3 per game in Pac-12 play. “She’s so quick and so fast,” Rueck said. The key on defense could be keeping the Bruins out of transition — something the Beavers have done a better job of the past two games — and rebounding. The Beavers should be well-rested for their second game in three days as nobody played more than 29 minutes in the blowout win over USC. Rueck called that a coach’s dream, and was something he hoped might be possible. “Not only for rest, because I don’t think they necessarily need that, but to get everybody going,” he said. “It’s been a while since we’ve been able to play our bench extended minutes. I thought it was great for that.” The Beavers have now won 18 straight conference games dating back to last season, and have been playing at a high level most of the season. So is Rueck concerned the Beavers might be peaking too early? “No, we’ve got so far to go,” he said. “You look at the box score and there’s nothing perfect on this. Even defensively it’s not perfect. So we’ve got a long way to go, we know that. It’s possession by possession. That’s all we can control.” Added Jamie Weisner: “We always talk about just trying to limit our weaknesses and I think every day we go into the gym with that mindset. We have tough practices every day and everyone is working together toward that goal.” Rueck said there are no highs and lows with this team. One example came Saturday when Deven Hunter, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds, was asked during the postgame interview session if she was happy because her body language.
